REGISTRATION/REFUND Frequently Asked Questions
My child is new to the program. How do I register?
All applications are registered first come, first serve. We strongly recommend your child attend the earliest swim test possible. Please call (949) 361-8261 if you have questions regarding this process.

My child is returning to the program. How do I register?
You will receive an application in the mail on approximately April 14. DON'T WAIT! All applications are registered first come, first serve. Resident and non-residents, mail or walk in your application as soon as you receive it in the mail. Resident applications will be registered upon receipt and non-resident applications will be held and registered in the order received.

My child will be 10 years old a few days after the session starts. Can he/she start late?
No. Our cut-off age is absolute and requires that your child must be 10 years old on or before the first day of the session. No exceptions.

What are the most popular sessions and do you offer a wait list for those?
Morning sessions are traditionally the most popular. We no longer offer a waitlist. The program has grown in popularity and accomodates as many kids as possible while still maintaining safe staffing levels on the beach. We thank you in advance for your understanding.

What determines residency?
Residency is determined by the City where your child lives most of the year. Simply owning property in San Clemente (ie: vacation rental, commercial property, apartment or second home) or staying/visiting someone in San Clemente for the summer does NOT determine residency.

Can my child be in the same class as their friends?
While every attempt will be made to honor written requests made on the application at the time of submission, we cannot guarantee that all requests will be honored. Classes are set based on instructor availability, the safety of the children, and a safe instructor to student ratio. Changes will NOT be made the 1st day of class.

How do I know if my child made it into the program and what is the refund policy?
Registration confirmation is sent to the email address printed on the front of the application. Please write neatly. A full refund (via check or into your city account) will be given if notification of cancellation is received by the main office (NOT Marine Safety) prior to the start of the first class. If notification of a participant cancellation is received by the main office (NOT Marine Safety) after the first class, but prior to the start of the second class, a refund less a $8 withdrawal fee will be issued. No refunds will be issued after the start of the second class.

What if my child can’t complete the entire session or will miss some of the days due to a family vacation?
No refunds or credits are allowed. If your child will be absent, please email the division secretary at MarineSafety@san-clemente.org call 361-8261 and leave a message. Please make every attempt to be present for the 1st week, as it is the most crucial.

SWIM TEST Frequently Asked Questions
SWIM TEST REQUIRED
100 yards (4 laps) in two minutes or less. Test conducted by our Ocean Lifeguards. NO EXCEPTIONS

SWIM TEST DATES
TBA

Call the JG hotline for more information (949)361-8261 (2#). All tests are held on Saturdays 7:30am-10:30am at the Ole Hanson Beach Club (105 W. Ave Pico).

At the tryouts, are kids allowed to dive in or start from the wall? Also, do they have to wear goggles, speedos and a swim cap?
Either start is fine. Goggles, speedos, and swim caps are not required but highly recommended.

Can I set up an alternate swim test (ie: 1. My child failed the test; 2. We live out of the area; 3. I can’t make any of the tests)? Can my child’s swim coach verify the time?
NO exceptions are made. Unless your child passes one of the swim tests provided at the Ole Hanson pool during open tryouts, they cannot participate in our program. This is for safety of the entire class.

PROGRAM Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Uniform Requirements and where can I purchase them?
Participants are issued a Jr. Lifeguard t-shirt, hat, and patch on the first day that will need to be sewn on the lower left leg, one inch above the bottom seam of navy blue trunks for males and on the left hip of a navy blue one-piece swimsuit for females. Trunks and swimsuits are not issued and will need to be purchased before the first day of class. Trunks and swimsuits can be purchased at local sporting goods stores or surf shops. Additional: Jr. Lifeguard sweatshirts ($20-limited sizes) go on sale at Marine Safety Headquarters Monday-Thursday between 8am-2pm (only). Purchase is not mandatory.

What should my child bring and not bring to class?
As little as possible, but sunscreen and towel are a must. Swim fins and a rash guard are strongly encouraged. ALWAYS mark your child’s name on the item with permanent marker. Secure storage is unavailable and we will not be responsible for any missing or stolen items. Do not bring food, drinks (water is provided), money, valuables (sentimental or monetary), boogie boards or surf boards. Soft “doyle’s” and boogie boards are provided for use during class.
