Phase I of the Beach Trail is complete, and work on Phase II construction is just about finished.

September 17th, 2008 UPDATE:

SAVE THE DATE: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2008 AT 10 A.M. FOR THE COASTAL TRAIL DEDICATION!

Join us for a dedication ceremony for the San Clemente Coastal Trail at North Beach at 1850 Avenida Estacion near the Metrolink Station off of North El Camino Real. On this day, the San Clemente Coastal Trail will officially join the California Coastal Trail to serve as a significant link in this statewide trail, making more of the beach accessible to the public by creating a coordinated access system of regional and statewide significance. The City of San Clemente is proud to partner with Coastwalk, the State Coastal Conservancy and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy on this historic event.

Questions, contact Laura Ferguson, City of San Clemente at (949) 361-8254.

Please refer to the Phase I information below for background on the overall project and to see what has been accomplished under Phase I. Regular newsletter updates for Phase II are now being provided. Click here for a list of all updates!

Trail Description

A Coastal Pedestrian Trail from North Beach to Calafia. Trail Surface will be Decomposed Granite with organic stabilizer. Native plantings with drought tolerant accents will line the path.

Actual improvements on beach will be kept to a minimum:

  • Avoiding the use of hard surfaces (concrete or asphalt)
  • No new seawalls, revetments or jetties
  • No further encroachment onto beach
  • Improvements that come in contact with the ocean should be non-permanent stable structures
  • Barriers not blocking views
  • Use of rock and native vegetation
  • Always considering the natural character of San Clemente’s beaches

  • Barriers between trail and railroad tracks
Plants and 3-4” diameter rock mulch along with a Guard rail (fence) between 42" and 48". The fence selected uses horizontal wire strands that are nearly invisible in most lighting conditions. Note that all "At Grade" crossings will have warning bells and gate.

    Fencing Diagram
4’6” Posts are “WoodCrete” colored brown 1/8 inch steel cable spaced every 5 inches. Top Cable is 4’0” high except at Linda Lane where it is 4’5”.

    North Beach Area
North Beach will use it's current At Grade Crossing.
The trail will run on the inland side of the tracks.
Diji Court and El Portal will have new "At Grade" crossings with steps through the rocks down to the sand. The "At Grade" crossings will have warning bells and gate.

    Mariposa Point Boardwalk
Mariposa Point access is restricted by bluffs that line the tracks. To address this issue an elevated boardwalk is proposed.

    Linda Lane
Linda Lane Park will be extended seaward to encompass the new trail and the current underpass under the tracks will be remodeled for pedestrian traffic. The steps down to the underpass will be similar to the current pier bowl underpass.

Corto Lane: North of Lifeguard Headquarters To The Pier
Behind the restrooms, north of Lifeguard Headquarters is a beach access referred to as Corto Lane or “Second Spot”. At this point the trail will cross over the tracks and continue on the seaward side behind the main lifeguard building following the current service road. The same Decomposed Granite and native planting themes will follow through this portion of the trail and be incorporated in the Pier Bowl area. The "At Grade" crossing at Corto Lane will have warning bells and gate.

Pier to South of T-Street and Boca Del Canon
The trail will continue south along the current service road on the seaward side of the tracks under the T-Street overpass, behind the bathrooms South of T-Street and cross back over the tracks at Boca Del Canon ("The Hole"). The graphic shows this cross over at Boca Del Canon.

    Lost Winds
The trail continues on the inland side of the track with an "At Grade" crossing at the Lost Winds beach access. The "At Grade" crossing will have warning bells and gate.

    Riviera
At Riviera the current under pass will be improved and used as the beach access from the trail.

    South Riveria To Montalvo
The current walkway along the train trestle will be enhanced and the trail will provid a beach access under the trestle.

    Calafia
The trail splits and ends with the At Grade crossing at Calafia and parking lot. From here the State Park will be responsible for trail improvements.
